Rules

BikePolo has various international rulesets, but here are the basic principles to get you started:

1.

3 People per Side

Teams consist of three players each. Matches typically last 12 minutes or until a team scores 5 goals.

2.

Keep your Feet up

Avoid putting your foot down! If your foot touches any horizontal surface, you must leave play and 'tap out' by hitting a marker on the side of the court with your mallet before rejoining the game.

3.

Score with a shot

Goals must be scored with a shot using the capped or open end of the mallet. Pushing the ball with the flat side of the mallet, known as a “shuffle,” doesn’t count.

4.

Contact

Like-for-like contact is allowed: bike on bike, mallet on mallet, and body on body.

5.

GoaL

The goalposts should be spaced one bike-width apart.

6.

BE KIND

The most important rule is: Don’t be a jerk. Show respect to others and enjoy yourself!

Bring your Helmet

Wearing a helmet during bike polo is essential for your safety. It protects against head injuries from falls and collisions, ensuring players can enjoy the game with confidence.

A BikePolo bike

Bike polo bikes have shorter frames for better maneuverability and brakes on the left handlebar for right-handed mallet control. We can provide a bike for new players to help them get started.

A Mallet

In bike polo, a mallet is a crucial tool used to hit the ball and score goals. It consists of a long handle with a cylindrical head. We can provide a mallet for new players to ensure they have the proper equipment to start playing.

Padding

Knee and elbow padding aswell as padded gloves are optional but highly recommended in bike polo. It helps you feel secure during the game, allowing you to focus fully on playing.

Tools and Repair

Bike pump, Allen key, or patches for an inner tube? You never know when a bike might need a quick fix, but someone usually has what you need. We help each other out when necessary.

Bring Water

Bike polo is an intense sport, and staying hydrated is essential, particularly when playing in hot weather.
